Don’t Let Red Tape Make You Blue

There will always be processes to follow. Don’t drown in the paperwork or lose your joy.

If you’ve worked in any organization, you know what it’s like to deal with red tape. The emails, the forms, the approvals, the processes… simply put, the paperwork. Sometimes it feels like you need approval just to breathe before making your next move. Red tape can be frustrating. It slows momentum, drains energy, and makes even simple tasks feel complicated. As leaders, we often feel caught between wanting to move quickly and needing to follow procedures. The temptation to bypass the process is real, especially when some steps feel redundant.

I experienced this firsthand when I married an American and went through the process of getting my green card. Honestly, the red tape could have made 90 Day Fiancé look like a walk in the park. What we thought would be straightforward turned into a long and sometimes discouraging journey. There were forms, documents, verifications, and long waiting periods. At times, I felt stuck and ready to give up. But somewhere along the way, something shifted.

Instead of being frustrated with the process, I decided to trust that things would come together in the right time and I chose to enjoy the journey. With that shift in mindset, I began to notice the people along the way. Kind individuals who took time to explain, guide, and support me. They weren’t just part of a system. They were people doing their jobs well and I could respect that. And I learned something I didn’t expect: patience IS a virtue. Waiting is hard, especially when you feel ready. But that season taught me to slow down and trust that not everything meaningful happens quickly. In fact, most worthwhile things take time.

Looking back, I can honestly say I’m grateful for the process. Because the truth is, systems exist for a reason. They help ensure people are qualified, prepared, and capable. Processes aren’t just there to slow things down. They protect integrity and create accountability. Now, that doesn’t mean they’re perfect. But they usually have a purpose.

So here’s the balance: respect the process, but don’t let it consume you. It’s easy to get frustrated with “just one more form” and take it out on the people enforcing it. But remember: our attitude matters. The way we respond sets the tone for others. Instead, choose to navigate systems with perspective. Do what needs to be done. Ask questions. And keep on moving ahead. Most of all, don’t let it steal your joy.

Leadership isn’t about paperwork. It’s about people. It’s about connection, presence, and impact. Don’t get so buried behind your desk that you forget your "why". Step away. Engage. Experience where you are. Joy isn’t dependent on perfect systems. It’s something you carry with you, on the inside. So, follow procedure and still be kind. Complete tasks and still lead with heart.

Nugget of Truth

There will always be processes to follow. Don’t drown in the paperwork or lose your joy. Get out from behind your desk, experience where you are, and bring joy with you. Remember: don’t let red tape make you blue.
