What Are You Listening To?

What we allow into our ears eventually finds its way into our heart.

What are you listening to right now? That question matters more than we think. There’s a Chris Stapleton song called “What Are You Listening To?” and it’s one of my favorites because it reminds me that songs carry memories. Music, voices, and messages don’t just fill the silence. They shape our mood, influence our thinking, and often steer our decisions. What we allow into our ears eventually finds its way into our heart.

Think about how often we default to the familiar. Are you watching reruns of shows and movies you’ve seen countless times simply because they’re comfortable and predictable? There’s nothing wrong with familiarity, but when was the last time you intentionally chose something new and life-giving? When did you decide to stop listening to the same ol’ thing and instead tune in to something encouraging instead of depressing, positive instead of negative, and forward-moving instead of holding you back?

Listening is an intentional act. I’ve learned that I can’t afford to be passive about what I consume. That’s why I often listen to sermons on YouTube by leaders like T.D. Jakes, Steven Furtick, Jentezen Franklin, and John Bevere. Their words challenge my thinking, strengthen my faith, and remind me of God’s purpose. I also love instrumental jazz because it carries a calming, positive vibe. It quiets the noise and helps me refocus.

Scripture speaks clearly about the power of listening. “Listen to my instruction and be wise. Don’t ignore it” (Proverbs 8:33). Wisdom begins with what we choose to hear. God’s instruction often comes through His Word, but it can also come through wise voices, mentors, and leaders who have walked the road before us.

That’s why it’s important to listen to other leaders, even those outside your field of study. Find an expert in their craft and learn what makes them tick. What is their “why”? Who do they listen to? Growth often comes when we open our ears to perspectives that stretch us.

If you’re looking to expand your listening, here are a few podcast suggestions to get you started:

  • The Craig Groeschel Leadership Podcast

  • NXT Chapter Podcast with T.D. Jakes

  • The Mel Robbins Podcast

  • The John Maxwell Leadership Podcast

So, what are you listening to today? Whatever it is, make sure it’s feeding your faith, fueling your growth, and pointing you forward.

Nugget of Truth: Be careful who you listen to and what you listen to. Value what you are depositing and putting in between your two ears.
